Cantwell to Join Secretaries Jewell and Moniz at Manhattan Project National Historical Park Event

November 9, 2015

Washington, D.C. – Tomorrow, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), ranking member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, will participate in the signing ceremony for the Memorandum of Agreement between the Department of Energy and the Interior establishing the Manhattan Project National Historical Park.

The Manhattan Project is the story of the best scientists, industry, military and American citizens working at sites across the country to translate original scientific discoveries into the world’s first full-scale plutonium production reactor, which was an integral part of creating the atomic bomb that helped end World War II. Major Manhattan Project sites include Hanford, Wash.; Oak Ridge, Tenn. and Los Alamos, N.M. The Department of Energy and National Park Service will include the department’s most significant Manhattan Project properties within a multi-site national park.

The National Defense Authorization Act of 2015 authorized the park. Prior to establishing the park, the secretaries of Energy and the Interior are required by law to enter into a memorandum of agreement, defining the roles and responsibilities of the departments in administering the park. Tuesday’s ceremony marks the signing of that agreement and the establishment of the Manhattan Project National Historical Park.
