Senate Energy Committee Ranking Member Jeff Bingaman (D-NM) today saluted Dr. George F. Smoot of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, co-winner of the 2006 Nobel Prize in Physics. Dr. Smoot was honored for helping lead teams of researchers, engineers and others who worked on a historic NASA satellite experiment.

“I offer heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Smoot for his outstanding contribution to science and excellent work in the fields of physics and cosmology,” Bingaman said.  “Congratulations, also, to the Department of Energy and its Office of Science -- both of which are major contributors to America’s scientific might.  The energy bill that Sen. Domenici and I passed last year put the Office of Science firmly on the path of doubling its research, and it elevated DOE’s prominence in international science by strengthening its management with a new Undersecretary of Science.  Both are objectives which I have advocated for many years.”
