On Thursday, Sept. 23, the full committee will examine the U.S. Department of Energy’s Loan Guarantee Program and its effectiveness in spurring the near-term deployment of clean energy technology.  Witnesses will include Jonathan Silver, executive director,  Loan Program Office, U.S. Department of Energy; Tim Newell, senior advisor, U.S. Renewables Group, Santa Monica, CA; Michael Scott, managing director, Miller Buckfire & Co., New York; Jens Meyerhoff, president and chief financial officer, First Solar, Inc., Tempe, AZ; and Marvin Fertel, president and chief executive officer, Nuclear Energy Institute, Washington.  (Dirksen 366 at 9:30 a.m.)
 
Looking Ahead: On Thursday, Sept. 30, the Subcommittee on Energy will examine the role of strategic minerals in clean energy technologies and other applications, plus legislation on the topic, including S. 3521, the Rare Earths Supply Technology and Resources Transformation Act of 2010.  Rare earth minerals are widely used not only in many of today’s high-tech products such as wind turbines, hybrid vehicles, cell phones, computers, TVs and energy efficient lighting, but also in sophisticated U.S. military equipment.  Witnesses to be announced.  (Dirksen 366, 10:00 a.m.)
