Because of the energy bill …

The first new geothermal power plant in a decade was brought on-line November 14th in Nevada, and a second geothermal plant recently commenced construction in Idaho .  In addition, 41 additional geothermal power plants are under construction, which combined will add around 2,000 Megawatts of new power.  This will nearly double the current geothermal power production in the .   

 

Geothermal provisions in the energy bill:

 

  • made new geothermal plants eligible for the full federal production tax credit;

     

  • gave the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) new legal guidance and secure funding to address its backlog of geothermal leases and permits and,

     

  • authorized and directed increased funding for research by the Department of Energy.
