WASHINGTON – In response to authorization granted by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission for the Tennessee Valley Authority to restart Browns Ferry nuclear power plant Unit 1, U.S. Senator Pete Domenici, ranking member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, issued the following statement:

“I am very pleased that the NRC has authorized the restart of Browns Ferry nuclear power plant Unit 1 in Alabama.  The Tennessee Valley Authority has completed an extensive refurbishment of the plant over the past five years to ensure that it meets all current safety requirements.

“The restart of this plant is an indication of the growing demand for nuclear power, which is a safe, clean energy source.  Nuclear power has turned the corner in this country.  As we debate global climate change during this Congress, it is essential that we remember the promise of nuclear energy.  In fact, I believe that it is not possible to have a serious discussion about reducing greenhouse gas emissions that does not include nuclear energy as a major power source.

“In this instance, most regulatory hurdles have already been met, since Browns Ferry already holds an operating license.  But as a result of The Energy Policy Act of 2005, which provided loan guarantee authority, production tax credits, and insurance protection against licensing delays and litigation for nuclear power projects, over thirty new nuclear power plants have been proposed.

“I look forward to the refurbished unit at Browns Ferry coming online, and I’m eagerly anticipating continued progress on other new projects which will improve our nation’s energy security.   I also look forward to hearing more about the challenges faced at Browns Ferry so that we can put that knowledge to use throughout the country during this nuclear renaissance.”
