The Department of the Interior has implemented programs on public lands designed to expedite development of economically viable technologies leading to commercial scale recovery of the United States’ 800 billion barrels of recoverable oil from oil shale. Section 369 of the Energy Policy Act has led to new research that represents a combined industry investment of over $1 billion. One company, Shell Exploration and Production, hopes to proceed to a commercial program as early as 2010.
