Renewable energy projects on the Outer Continental Shelf will be managed and coordinated in a manner similar to oil and gas exploration and production. The Minerals Management Service (MMS), within the Department of the Interior, is tasked with the role of lead agency on such projects, with consultation from other relevant agencies within the Federal Government. MMS is the lead agency on a plan for an offshore wind farm in Nantucket Sound, MA which is estimated to be capable of powering on average three-quarters of Cape Cod and surrounding islands. Additionally, MMS intends to hold two scoping meetings in Long Island, NY in July to obtain public comments on the proposed Long Island Offshore Wind Project in New York.
