The Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) continues recovery and storage of low-level radioactive sealed sources until a permanent disposal facility is available. These sources posed a potential threat to public health and security. The NNSA, through the U.S. Radiological Threat Reduction Program, has also cleared a nationwide backlog of sources, resulting in the recovery of more than 12,000 sealed sources from 1999 through 2005 from almost every state in the nation. During the past two years 2,700 at-risk radiological sources were removed totaling 74,350 curies – enough for more than 74 dirty bombs.
