WASHINGTON, D.C. - Senator Frank H. Murkowski, the Ranking Member on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, released the following statement this evening in response to the President’s State of the Union address: “The President tonight laid out a course for a more secure America. He explained his plans to ensure our national, economic and personal security – a future that includes secure supplies of energy. “Almost a year ago, the President proposed a comprehensive energy plan that uses American technology and ingenuity to help encourage conservation, improve efficiency, and develop alternative fuel sources. Future energy technologies hold great promise – but too many in Congress ignore the fact that the technology of tomorrow is not available today. “We need a bridge to tomorrow’s energy solutions. That means making the most of traditional resources until we can replace them in earnest. But we cannot afford to import those resources from dangerous parts of the world. “The President’s plan doesn’t include being held hostage by foreign oil from places like Iraq. Tonight he again called Congress to build that energy bridge here at home. While the House acted swiftly with the best interest of our security in mind, the Senate has sat on its hands under the direction of Senator Daschle.” “I am encouraged by the President’s words tonight. I hope that they do not fall on the deaf ears of Senator Daschle.” -30-
