WASHINGTON, D.C. - Chairman Frank Murkowski (R-AK) released the following statement this evening after legislation regarding the National World War II Memorial was cleared by the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee and passed by the full Senate. “More than 50 years ago, a generation mobilized to turn back tyranny. Many became heroes on the battlefields of Europe and seas of the Pacific. Too many didn’t come home. “I have been frustrated that so many of these brave Americans who did return have lived their lives without a permanent tribute to their service. The National Mall is a place of heroes and leaders – clearly the veterans of World War II have earned a place there. With this agreement in place, we can finally say with certainty that day is coming. “This bipartisan agreement ensures construction will move forward at the Rainbow Pool site on the National Mall within the plans and permits that have already been agreed upon. We end the unnecessary delays and court actions that have threatened even more delays. “I want to thank my colleagues Senators Stevens, Inouye, Thompson, Bingaman, and Thomas for their help in crafting this solution and their support for such an important effort.” ###
