WASHINGTON, D.C.– Chairman Frank H. Murkowski released the following statement this morning after the introduction of President Bush’s FY 2001 federal budget proposal: “The President introduced a bold plan today – it clearly serves as a road map toward economic responsibility and prosperity. This proposal will help us to finally regain control of our energy future. I know President Bush’s commitment to that goal is unwavering and this budget is yet another example of that dedication. “Included in this plan are a number of energy proposals to help protect American consumers - especially those low income families who can’t afford higher energy costs. No parent should have to make a decision about paying heating bills or buying groceries. Every child deserves the opportunity to grow up in a warm home. “The President’s support for the responsible exploration of just a small sliver of Alaska’s north slope is an integral part of a balanced, comprehensive national energy strategy. President Bush recognizes that in order to reduce our dependence on foreign oil we must not only promote the use of alternative fuels and increase energy efficiency, we must also explore and find new resources here at home. The president’s budget proposal sets the stage to achieve this. “Until we have a national energy plan in place, our national security remains at risk. President Bush shares this concern with me. I look forward to working with the President to not only ensure his budget proposal is approved but that his energy policies help protect our nation’s growth.” ###
