Sen. Murkowski: American Deepwater Energy Must be Globally Competitive

Top Energy Panel Republican Releases Report on Offshore Exports, Sends Letter to MARAD

December 15, 2014

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, today sent a letter to the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) expressing her support for the agency’s efforts to prepare for future exports of oil and gas from deepwater ports in offshore regions of the United States. She also released a study by the Law Library of Congress highlighting the deepwater export policies of key American allies.

“A modernized energy policy that allows American deepwater energy to compete globally will strengthen our economy and enhance our national security,” Murkowski said. “Many of our closest allies are producing in their offshore regions and exporting directly to customers. This may be a model for us to learn from.”

The letter was sent as a comment on the administration’s notice of proposed policy (DOT Docket Number MARAD-2014-0132) posted in the Federal Register on Oct. 16. The Law Library of Congress report, commissioned by Murkowski’s energy committee staff, examines the export policies of Australia, Canada, Denmark, Norway, and the United Kingdom.
