Landrieu: Use comprehensive and appropriate data to ensure energy rail transportation safety

July 24, 2014

WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Mary L. Landrieu, D-La., the chair of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, called on the Department of Transportation to use the most comprehensive and appropriate data possible when evaluating crude oil and related products under its proposed crude-by-rail safety rule.

“In order to realize the full potential of the North American energy revolution, it is important to be able to transport energy safely and efficiently, and I am currently reviewing the proposed crude-by-rail safety rule released by the Department of Transportation (DOT),” Sen. Landrieu said. “I will work closely with DOT and the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) to make the rule as effective as possible. We must ensure that the most comprehensive and appropriate data is used to evaluate how to classify crude and related products under the rule.”
