WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Senate last night passed by unanimous consent two resolutions and an Energy and Natural Resources bill that would protect a unique and diverse area in Oregon, while at the same time promoting continued grazing and protecting private property rights. The Steens Mountain Cooperative Management and Protection Act of 2000, HR 4828 (Rep. Greg Walden, R - Ore.), would establish the Steens Mountain Cooperative Management and Protection Area in Oregon. The bill also creates an advisory committee to manage the nearly 500,000 acre that would make up the area. The advisory committee would include local governmental officials, ranchers and members of the environmental community. Additionally the bill would designate four Wild and Scenic Rivers in the area. The following resolutions were passed by the senate: S Con Res. 114 (Sen. Christopher Bond, R - Mo.) A concurrent resolution recognizing the Liberty Memorial in Kansas City, Missouri, as a national World War I symbol honoring those who defended liberty and our country through service in World War I. S Res. 368 (Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan, D - NY) A resolution to recognize the importance of relocating and renovating the Hamilton Grange, New York. ###
